Sen. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, claims that most youngsters are unemployed due to a lack of functional skills.

On Thursday in Abuja, Ngige said this while declaring open a one-day trade Job, Career, and Employability Fair.

The exhibition, titled “Promoting Employability, Skills Development, and Decent Work,” was hosted by the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Mrs. Tilda Mmegwa, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Job Creation, represented Ngige, who stated that all stakeholders must be actively involved in training the African workforce for the “future of work.”

According to him, the Nigerian government is aware that the majority of unemployed people lack functional skills.

“Our strategy, therefore, is to equip the unemployed youths with market-driven skills, which will facilitate their access to self or paid employment.

“In recognition of this reality, my ministry is keenly committed to equipping unemployed graduates with entry point competencies to make them employable.

“I am therefore happy to inform you that my ministry is scheduled to train 37,000 unemployed graduates, 1,000 in each of the states of the federation and FCT, on soft skills and marketable resumes.

“In the coming months, we will also train 3,500 unemployed youth in various vocations including fashion design, catering and event management, solar panel and CCTV installation, among others,’’ he said.

The minister stated that every one of the trainees would be given startup kits in order to start their own businesses right away.

He said the projects demonstrated the administration’s dedication to providing young unemployed job seekers with cutting-edge skills to start a self- or compensated business.

Ms. Vanessa Phala, ILO Country Director, stated that COVID-19 had resulted in the loss of numerous jobs, and that the unemployment rate had continued to rise.

Phala stated that there is no social protection and urged the youth to ensure that they are adaptive to new knowledge in order to get work.

Mr. Taiwo Adeniyi, the NECA President, further stated that the fair was held to boost employability and the prospects of youths and job seekers finding work.

Mrs. Olubunmi Adekoje, Director-General, Federation of Construction Industry, represented Adeniyi, who said the expo would also be hosted in Port Harcourt and Enugu to guarantee maximum impact and reach.

As a result, he praised the Ministry of Labour and Employment, or ILO, for its readiness to address the country’s unemployment problems.

Participants Neden Bolcit and Aforlayan Gabriel expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to visit the fair.

According to the attendees, the expo provided them with one-on-one career counseling as well as job interviews.
