Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President and presidential candidate, has reacted to the death of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the Alaafin of Oyo.

After a brief illness, Oba Adeyemi died on Friday night in Ado Ekiti, the state capital of Ekiti.

The Yoruba traditional ruler was said to be undergoing treatment at Ado Ekiti’s Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, where he subsequently died.

The rites of passage for Alaafin, who reigned for 52 years, have begun, it was revealed.

Atiku responded in a statement sent by his spokeswoman Paul Ibe, saying the Alaafin was a good ambassador of Yoruba culture.

The late Oba Adeyemi was a deserving ambassador of Yoruba culture and regal elegance, according to the PDP chieftain, who described his death as a big loss for Nigeria and African culture in general.

Atiku recounted his final interaction with Oba Adeyemi taking place in Ibadan during the coronation of Oba Lekan Balogun, the Olubadan of Ibadan.

“I admired the royal splendour of Oba Adeyemi and the fact that he remains the longest serving Alaafin means that Oyo and indeed Nigerians will not forget his reign,” the Waziri of Adamawa said.

Atiku expressed his sorrow over Oba Adeyemi’s death and expressed his condolences to his immediate family, Governor Seyi Makinde, and the people and government of Oyo State.

He prayed to Allah to grant the late king’s soul a peaceful repose and to provide his immediate family and the people of Oyo Kingdom with the strength to bear the loss of such a magnificent monarch.
