Mr. Bola Tinubu, a frontline contestant for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, will give bags of rice to not less than ten Northern states as free presents for the Sallah festival.
Sallah marks the end of a month of fasting for Muslims, during which the faithful engage in fervent prayer for the forgiveness of sins.
Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State (1999-2007), is known for exchanging foods and other stuff during Muslim holidays, and he, like other politicians, does so throughout political campaigns.
According to aides, this generosity will benefit at least ten states in Nigeria’s north, with each state receiving 3,000 bags of rice.
Nasarawa State, home to the party’s National Chairman, Mr. Abdullahi Adamu, has already gotten its share, with 3,000 being distributed around the state for the Sallah feast on Friday.
Katsina, where the President, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, is from, Kebbi, where the Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Mr. Atiku Bagudu, is from, Yobe, where the former APC Caretaker Committee, Mai Mala Buni, is from, and Kaduna State, one of the states with the highest voter turnout in the north, are among the states set to receive the rice bags.
However, an aide told newsmen “the bags of rice are basically for the Holy month of Ramadan and not for political reasons.”
While giving the bags in Lafia, Tinubu, who was represented by Yusuf Omaki, the Nasarawa State Coordinator of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation, encouraged the recipients not to sell the rice but to use it for the purpose it was intended for.
He explained that it was a gesture aimed at raising their standard of living.
“This gesture is to provide succor to the people, especially the less privileged in Nasarawa State, ahead of this year’s Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
“I want to also use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians to scout out for competent leaders ahead of next year’s general election so as to curb the socio-economic challenges undermining the development of the country.
“So, I am soliciting the support of the APC members and all Nigerians to enable me to succeed in my presidential ambition.
“The 3,000 bags of rice allocated to Nasarawa State would be distributed to socio-cultural organizations, religious bodies, professional groups, and the APC party stalwarts.”
Tinubu had already given specifically branded rice bags in Kano in 2021, with additional distribution in Lagos, Katsina, and other parts of Northern Nigeria following.
