On Thursday, security personnel blocked a jailbreak at the Sapele Road Correctional Centre.
Gunshots were heard around 1.30 p.m. at the Correctional Centre, also known as. The institution was secured by the White House and a security force made up of police, army, Correctional Center armed employees, and vigilantes.
Moments later, the vigilante gang was observed blocking half of Sapele Road, causing cars to flee for their lives.
“There was an attempted jailbreak today at the Benin prison, leading to serious shooting. Soldiers and policemen have been drafted to the area.” a source disclosed.
Thousands of detainees escaped during the EndSARS riots from the Sapele Road Correctional Centre and the Oko, Airport Road Correctional Centre.
The shootings at the Sapele Road, Benin City, Correctional Centre by certain awaiting trial inmates, especially Jose recaptured following the jailbreak of the October 2020 EndSARS riots, have been labeled as “disturbance” by the Controller of Correctional Centre, Edo State Command, Felix Lawrence.
According to a statement released Thursday evening by DSC Aminu S. Suleman, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, several awaiting trial inmates began protesting at the institution at 12.30 p.m., resulting in a clash with the facility’s convicted convicts.
In the statement titled: “DISTURBANCE AT BENIN CUSTODIAL CENTRE”, the issue on behalf of the Controller of Correctional Centre, the PRO said: “At about 12.30 pm, some awaiting trial inmates especially the recaptured escapees started protest which led to a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates. Reinforcement was immediately mobilized from the State HEADQUARTERS to enforce law and order.
