Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, as well as some political heavyweights from the South, had broken off their relationship with Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate, over his alleged refusal to pressure Iyorchia Ayu, the party.

Despite numerous talks between Atiku and the governors in Nigeria and the UK, there was no progress since they insisted that Ayu’s resignation be a requirement for peace. and to make certain that the main opposition party’s leadership is balanced.

However, a high-ranking source claimed that the governors might accept Obasanjo’s advice and support Peter Obi, the front-runner for the Labour Party, when choosing which presidential candidate to back.

The former President reportedly campaigned for Obi during a meeting with the governors in London in August.

The governors are taking into consideration Obasanjo’s recommendation that the Presidency should move to the South in 2023, according to an adviser to one of the governors, who also provided background information on the variables that would influence their choice. They should back Obi, according to Obasanjo, who thinks that the South East should get the presidency if it comes to the South.

He advocated for Obi at their most recent meeting in London because justice and fairness require that the South-East provide the next president.

The insider responded, “From all indications, the governors will announce their favoured candidate next week.” When asked when the governors, also known as Integrity Group, will reveal their favourite candidate. They would make the announcement in Ibadan on January 5 if there is no significant incident before Makinde launches his campaign.

Reports that the group was split on which presidential candidate to support were refuted by an assistant to another governor.

The governors decided at the conference in London on Tuesday that they should support a southern candidate since Atiku had failed to get Ayu to resign.
