The emergence of an “Igbo president” (in this case, Peter Obi) in 2023 will not bring an end to the political deprivation of some regions in the country, it will not assure economic growth and political stability. It will only be the continuation of the status quo ante.

Nigeria in 2022: pre-election signposts - Menas Associates

According to the Nigerian Constitution, to emerge president, a candidate must obtain at least 25% of the votes in two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states and If no candidate passes this threshold, a second round will be held between the top two candidates.

Can Peter Obi gain 25% of votes in 24 of the 36 states of the federation under the Labour party? I personally do not think so.

Supporters of Peter Obi (which are mainly Igbos) will bring up Pseudo claims that he is the right man for the Job, they might aggrandize his political achievement (one which is glaringly obscure) and use his “Ethical” character (which I believe is a political stunt) as a confirmation bias of him being an apt Hierarch.

But let us be crude here, Peter Obi is an Igbo patsy or should I say “Igbo Messiah”, he is a result of the marginalization, alienation and disunion that is plaguing Nigeria, he represents the strive and spite that has been plaguing the southeast since 1999.

Identity Politics will not take Nigeria forward, except in cases of political ideologies, but ethnicity? That is just stupid.

Personally, I do not care if the next president is from the Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest, Southsouth, Middle-belt, “British Cameroon” or whatnot region of the country, as far as he/she crosses the items on my checklist, some of which includes amassing “Unity in Diversity”.

The fact that there is a cry for an “Igbo president” from a particular region of Nigeria shows that our past leaders have failed to unify and represent all regions of the country at the national level.

The emergence of an “Igbo president” (in this case, Peter Obi) in 2023 will not bring an end to the political deprivation of some regions in the country, it will not assure economic growth and political stability. It will only be the continuation of the status quo ante.

Looking at the history of the United States (an epitome of democracy) and her 46 presidents, it is quite obvious that in her 245 years of uninterrupted democracy, no president has emerged from 29 states of the country, and no one seems to care. But 23 years into the Nigerian fourth Republic, there’s a huge Clamour for an “Igbo President”.
