The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has said his office has not received any official correspondence from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), requesting the extradition of erstwhile Commander, Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Hushpuppi: No formal extradition request for Abba Kyari, says IGP

An investigative panel set up by the police authority had suspended Kyari for his alleged involvement in a $1.1 million bribe involving Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas.

This was following a warrant of arrest against DCP Abba Kyari by Judge Otis Wright of the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

Wright ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to track down Kyari and produce him in the United States for his role in the alleged fraud perpetrated by Hushpuppi.

According to the Inspector General of Police, who featured at the weekly press briefings coordinated by the Presidential Media Team on Thursday in Abuja, he has only heard about extradition on social media but nonofficial request has been made to that effect.

He said, “I have not heard about it formally, but I have read from the social media that there was an extradition request. I have not seen it, I have not had it formally. When this issue of Kyari started, we acted by constituting a panel to look at the allegations.”

He, however, confirmed that the panel constituted to investigate the case has submitted its report to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) for vetting and advice on the findings.

He noted that he only just received feedback and is contemplating the next line of action.

It would also be recalled that the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi, had in September noted that President Muhammadu Buhari will have the final say on the extradition request against the erstwhile commander of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari.

Mean while, Baba justified the deployment of 34,587 overt and covert police personnel for the November 6 Anambra gubernatorial election, saying though it may encourage low voter turnout, it became necessary to checkmate criminal elements that may disrupt the process.

According to him, the police is more interested in ensuring that the electoral process goes on hitch free, adding that the force has been using jingles and other public enlightenment mechanisms to restore confidence in the people.

Beyond the personnel, no fewer than three helicopters, including an unspecified number of EOD, gun boats and marine squads are being deployed to the state.

Recall that in the build up to the elections, the state witnessed heightened insecurity.

The IGP equally noted that the police currently have about 20,000 cases being prosecuted in court nationwide but has been able to secure 1,570 convictions including rescue of 934 kidnap victims.

He hinted that challenges posed by the #EndSARS protest served as a wake up call to the police, adding that it has resulted in several reforms within the police formations, part of which will soon culminate in the establishment of a dedicated insurance firm for the police force.

Askedto explain the rationale for an insurance firm to be domiciled under the control of the police force, he said, “Creating an insurance company for the officers of the police force is not a new thing, it will help to manage insurance aspect of policing, don’t forget that the military has something similar, what is important is that we conform with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) guidelines”.
