David Umahi, the governor of Ebonyi State and Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, has lamented the region’s worsening security situation.
The governor claimed that politicking among regional officials had exacerbated the region’s critical predicament.
Umahi said the Prof. George Obiozor-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo should be blamed for the inability to politically address the matter of the arrested leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, when he welcomed members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, in Abakaliki at the weekend.
He revealed that the leading Igbo socio-cultural group refused to pursue the South-East Governors’ meetings with President Muhammadu Buhari for a political solution to Kanu’s matter.
The governor expressed sadness that pointless politics had derailed all security and peace measures launched by officials in the region.
Umahi responded that the South-East Governors are working together to address the region’s security difficulties and other areas of cooperation, but that each state has its own problems and objectives.
His words:” When it comes to security, I must tell you in all honesty, there is politics in our security situation in this region. Do we say all the governors are bonded toward tackling security challenges? The answer is no. There is extreme politics in this region, and it must stop for the sake of our people”.
“When we started, we were all working together and I was the person championing against the activities of IPoB, that the agitation is not good for our people, that the kind of agitation being meted out was not correct; the kind of hate speech, and from there it developed to violence and we continued to lie to our people, oh they have infiltrated, not true. It is the South-East killing south – easterners and security people, and if we are not able to speak our it would continue”
Sitting at home is nonsense, according to Umahi, who advises Igbo to be wise. “It’s pointless and nonsense because even if Biafra exists, Ebonyi will not be a part of it.” He stated, “I have said it and I will continue to say it.”
