Morocco, who advanced to the FIFA World Cup semifinals in Qatar for the first time in history, claims that they may have advanced further if it weren’t for the “grotesque” refereeing performance by Cesar Ramos during their 2-0 loss to France on Wednesday.
Theo Hernandez’s early goal and Randal Kolo Muani‘s goal in the second half ensured France’s passage to their second straight World Cup final.
Morocco, who made history by participating in the final four, is still extremely miffed about the circumstances surrounding their withdrawal, with the Morocco FA (FRMF) claiming that they were wrongfully denied two penalties in the first half.
The FRMF has officially protested the disgusting officiating of the France-Morocco encounter to FIFA, according to a statement provided to The Athletic, particularly in light of the two penalties that weren’t given to Morocco in the first half.

Additionally, they “expect fairness” and “would not hesitate to defend the rights of our national team” were stated in the statement.
Two incidences that Morocco claims should have led to penalties are an alleged foul on striker Sofiane Boufal that was ruled as a foul on France defender Hernandez and a challenge on Selim Amallah by French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni in first-half injury time.
Morocco’s appeal was filed one day after Ramos allegedly asked the FRMF to challenge his on-field selections via an Instagram account.
“My friends, the Moroccan people, please, be patient, if you are not satisfied with the match, you can file a collective objection via the FIFA website and the match can be replayed,” the message on the social media platform read, after translation.
Ramos is one of many referees whose work has come under scrutiny in Qatar.
Following his team’s quarterfinal defeat to Morocco, Portuguese defender Pepe criticised Argentine official Facundo Tello, while Lionel Messi was one among many Argentina players to criticise Antonio Mateu Lahoz’s officiating after their encounter with the Netherlands.
“We were scared before the game,” said Messi after beating the Dutch.
“I think FIFA must think about it, they cannot put a referee like that for these important games, for such a pivotal game, a referee who isn’t up to the task.”
