Iyanu Ojo, a housewife, is seriously ill at the Owo General Hospital in Ondo State, after her husband, Oluwaseun Ojo, allegedly washed her in hot water following an altercation.
According to reports, the couple had a fight, and the husband went to the kitchen to boil water, which he then poured on her.
According to an eyewitness, the husband fled the house after committing the crime, while the wife wriggled in pain and cried for help. She was brought to the town’s general hospital, where she was treated and admitted, according to reports.
Funmi Odunlami, a state police image maker, said the incident was not reported to the Owo Divisional Police Station.
Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the state governor’s wife, reacted angrily to the occurrence, vowing to seek justice for the victim.
The action, which Akeredolu described as “bestial and intolerable,” was a despicable act that could not be condoned under any circumstances, he said.
In a statement issued by Debo Akinbami, Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media and Archives, Akeredolu warned that people who engage in such atrocious behavior under whatever pretense do not deserve to live among humanity.
She said: “The spate of spousal violence in the country is disturbing and regrettable. It is recurring and requires sterner actions.
“The narrative is both sad and sour. We cannot continue like this and just cannot afford inertia. Women should, at once, accept the fact that it is foolhardy to indulge abusive spouses to the detriment of one’s mental and physical health.
“Why die in an abusive marriage? Women should speak up against abuse and possibly walk out of deleterious relationships.”
The Ondo State Agency Against Gender-Based Violence is already involved in the matter, according to Akeredolu, and justice will be served.
“Let me state unequivocally that Ondo State will not be a haven for abusers, regardless of who is involved,” she continued. In this case, the Ondo State Agency Against Gender-Based Violence (OSA- GBV) is already handling the situation, and I can guarantee you that justice will be done.”
