Zakariya Ya’u, a 44-year-old man from Borno, has been detained for allegedly raping a 92-year-old woman.
Mr Abdu Umar, the state’s Commissioner of Police, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Thursday that Ya’u reportedly committed the crime in the state’s Askira Uba Local Government Area’s Mufa “A” ward.
On March 24, the victim was seated outside an unfinished building when she was pulled inside and raped by the suspect, according to Umar.
He claimed the woman screamed for help but was too weak to fight back against her rapist, so she just cried hopelessly.
According to Umar, the suspect was caught in the act by Usman Haruna, the victim’s 29-year-old grandson, who called the police before the culprit was detained.
“The grandson caught him on top of the woman with his trousers down and a charm tied around his waist,’’ the police commissioner said.
Ya’u admitted to the crime, according to Umar, who added that the case was still under investigation and that the suspect will be arraigned at a later date.
