Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking the second time in eight years that he has done so.
In a letter to the PDP chairman of Kwankwaso Ward in Kano State’s Madobi Local Government Area, the former governor announced his decision.
He cited “some serious and irreconcilable differences” as the reason for his departure from the party.
Mr. Kwankwaso had been in a long-running feud with the PDP over the leadership of the party’s North-West zone.
The party had suspended the zonal congress in Kaduna in April when supporters of Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal clashed with those of Mr. Kwankwaso.
Before voting could begin, they damaged vote boxes, forcing observers and other officials to escape the area.
The post of zonal National Vice Chairman was the key point of contention.
Mr. Kwankwaso is also embroiled in a feud with Aminu Wali, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs who leads a competing PDP party in Kano. Both men introduced themselves as candidates for zone vice-chairman.
The Kano branch of the New Nigerian People Party (NNPP) dissolved its executive committee and named Mr. Kwankwaso’s supporter as chairwoman after Mr. Kwankwaso announced his intention to join the party.
Mr. Kwankwaso, along with then-governors Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto, Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers States, first quit the PDP in November 2013. After staging a walkout from the PDP National Convention in Abuja, they joined the APC.
Mr. Kwankwaso, on the other hand, rejoined the PDP in July 2018 alongside 14 APC senators and ran for the PDP presidential ticket in the 2019 election, but was unsuccessful.
Mr. Kwankwaso is leaving the PDP with some of his allies, including Abba Kabir, the PDP governorship candidate in Kano in 2019, who announced his resignation from the PDP and joined the NNPP early this year.
