The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has stated that the alarming spike in crime in the country is not unrelated to criminal groups’ excessive use of hard narcotics.
The statement was made by Makinde Iskil Ayinla, Commandant of the NSCDC’s Kwara State Command, in Ilorin, the state capital, on Friday.
Mr Peter Onche Odaudu, the new Kwara State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), who paid him a courtesy visit, said the flagrant misuse of hard drugs converts individuals who engage in it into reckless and wayward characters, according to Ayinla.
He believes that hard narcotics are also to blame for the country’s ongoing insecurity.
The NSCDC Commandant praised the NDLEA’s efforts in eradicating drug misuse and other illegal drug use from society.
” When we are talking about the rise in crime rate in the country there is no way we will not mention the excessive abuse of hard drugs by these criminal elements.
“We talk about the increase in rape cases and you all agree with me that there is no way we can separate the negative effects of drugs,” the Commandant stated.
He did vow, however, that the NSCDC will work with the NDLEA to improve their working relationship in order to curb the rise in the use of hard drugs in society.
Earlier in his remarks, the NDLEA Commander, Mr Peter, criticised security operatives in the country abusing hard drugs in the guise of being brave and successful.
He added that the NDLEA is prepared to educate NSCDC officers and men on the dangers of drug addiction, and that the two federal government paramilitary organizations have had a productive working relationship, which he promised to continue during his stay in Kwara State.
