With less than a month till the presidential vote, the PDP is still struggling to persuade five of its elected governors to support Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the party’s nominee.

The Die Is Cast In PDP... G-5 Governors Launch Campaign Against Atiku

In September 2022, the governors of Rivers, Abia, Enugu, Oyo, and Benue states—Nyesom Wike, Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Seyi Makinde, and Samuel Ortom—renounced their membership in the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, among other things by calling for the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to make way for.

The fervour with which the governors have attacked the Ayu-led National Working Committee in recent months appears to be lessening, despite the fact that they are said to be supporting two competing candidates.

The governors’ failure to come to an agreement on which specific candidate to endorse is seen to be at least partially to blame for the current decline in activity in their ranks.

In Benue State, Atiku Abubakar supporters are working hard to win over party members in their strongholds despite Governor Ortom’s resistance. One such supporter is a former governor of the state named Gabriel Suswam.

Former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus is in charge of the base of pro-Atiku supporters in Rivers State. Contrary to Wike’s wishes, Secondus is portraying himself as the good party man with former state governor Celestine Omehia, former deputy speaker of the house of representatives Austin Opara, and former federal politician Lee Maeba.

Governors Ikpeazu and Ugwuanyi are expectedly supporting Obi and deploying their foot soldiers to protect them from the PDP’s wrath for any anti-party antics.
