Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, has announced that the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, which is currently being renovated, will be renamed the Lagos Creative and Entertainment Center once completed.
The minister made the announcement while signing a deal to organize the inaugural Global Conference on Cultural Tourism and Creative Industry in Nigeria on Tuesday in Madrid, Spain.
Nigeria and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) inked a bilateral agreement at the organization’s headquarters, according to the Nigerian News Agency.
The global conference, which will take place from November 14 to November 17, will be the first to be held at the freshly renovated structure, according to Mohammed.
“Nigeria will be hosting the event at the National Theatre in Lagos, which is currently being renovated at a cost of 100 million dollars under a partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Bankers’ Committee/Central Bank of Nigeria.
“It is the first of such renovation of the iconic edifice in over four decades.
“In addition to the renovation, new hubs are being constructed, within the premises of the National Theatre, for fashion, Information, technology, film and music.
“With that, the National Theatre is now known as the Lagos Creative and Entertainment Centre.
“In addition, the Lagos surface rail system, to serve the National Theatre, will be commissioned ahead of the Global Conference,’’ he said
The signing of the bilateral agreement, according to Mohammed, indicated Nigeria’s commitment to hosting the event.
As a result, he instructed the contractors in charge of the reconstruction project to guarantee that it was completed in time for the worldwide event.
In order to verify that the complex is ready for hosting in November, the minister said he recently went on a tour of current work there with stakeholders.
The Nigerian Ambassador to Spain, Ademola Seriki, who also happens to be a member of the Board of Directors of the business in charge of the rehabilitation project, claimed the structure would be finished in time for the worldwide event.
Seriki, who accompanied the minister to the signing of the bilateral agreement, said the conference would boost Nigeria’s profile and demonstrate the country’s leadership in music, theater, and other forms of entertainment in Africa.
The National Theatre, Nigeria’s historic performing arts center, was founded to conserve, showcase, and promote the country’s arts and culture.
The monument was finished in 1976 in time for the Festival of Arts and Culture, which took place in 1977.
