The Federal Government has extended the deadline for linking the National Identity Number (NIN) to the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification exercise until December 31 once more.

This is the seventh time the administration has prolonged the experiment, which was launched in order to reduce crime in the country.

“The Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), has conveyed the Federal Government’s approval to extend the deadline for NIN-SIM data verification.” Citizens and legal residents are asked to finish the procedure by the end of 2021′′, according to a joint statement issued by Ikechukwu Adinde, spokeswoman for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and Kayode Adegoke, spokesperson for the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

According to the statement, the decision to extend the deadline was made in response to petitions from Mobile Network Operators and other industry players.

It stated that stakeholders had requested an additional extension in order to ensure better compliance with the government’s instruction and to avoid expanding the digital gap.

It said: ” The extension would also provide the enabling environment for the registration of Nigerians in remote areas, diaspora, schools, hospitals, worship centres, as well as foreigners, diplomatic missions, those in other areas that were hitherto unreachable, and increase enrolments in countries with a significant number of Nigerians.”

“The review of the progress of the exercise indicated that over 66 million unique National Identity Numbers (NIN) have been issued- an indication of progress achieved in the ongoing NIN-SIM linkage.”

However, the government said “a significant part of the populace is yet to be registered into the National Identity Database (NIDB).”

According to the NCC and NIMC, there were over 9,500 enrolment systems and over 8,000 NIN enrolment centers within and outside the country as of Saturday.

The NIN-SIM verification procedure, according to the government, is helping to build Nigeria’s digital economy, increase its capabilities to safeguard cyberspace, and support security agencies.

According to the statement, the federal government will ensure that all law-abiding persons and residents will keep their phone lines as long as they receive and link their NIN.

“Government will also continue to provide an enabling environment for investors in the telecommunications sector”, the statement added.
