The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, on Wednesday, June 02, 2022 gave fresh insight into the push by President Muhammadu Buhari to have his preferred successor emerge through a consensus arrangement just as he pleaded with the President to quickly come to the rescue of Nigeria’s currency, the naira, before politicians depreciates it out of recognition.

In a statement on Sunday, in Abuja, Okechukwu, who is also, a founding member of All Progressives Congress (APC) decried the dollar rain during the recent Presidential primary of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the National Stadium Abuja.

He said that a nation’s currency is one of the critical indices of measuring the general health of its economy, stressing that when the currency nose-dives it leads to hype-inflation, gross unemployment and abject poverty, thereby worsening the nation’s security.

Recall that after holding his party members, especially the governors and the presidential aspirants in suspense for months over the matter, President Buhari had at a crucial meeting, Tuesday in Abuja laid bare his consensus card, noting that as the party prepares for its convention, its focus should be on victory at the 2023 presidential poll.

Rising in defence of President Buhari’s consensus candidate proposition on a live television chat, the VON boss said the consensus arrangement would not only help the party to stave off possible post-convention rancours, but also prevent ‘a dollar rain’ that could further weaken the already battered Naira in the foreign exchange market.

Okechukwu said the deluge of dollars that allegedly exchanged hands at the rival PDP’s recently held convention involving less than 774 delegates was a precursor to the scenario waiting to play out if presidential aspirants are allowed to canvas the votes of over 2000 delegates at the APC forthcoming convention.

He dismissed insinuations that the President would be forced to pick a Northerner as his successor following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubarkar as the PDP candidate, arguing that Buhari understands the dynamics of election in Nigeria and will be well guided in settling for the best candidate from any part of the country.

Okechukwu pointed out that it is wrong to conclude that the North would not vote for any candidate from other parts of the country as the region has risen above tribal sentiments many times in deciding its preferred candidates as happened in the cases of late Bashorun MKO Abiola and former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

“Though we have to be patient for the President to return from his trip to Spain to unveil his preferred candidate, it is wrong to conclude that he will settle for a Northerner because Atiku has emerged in PDP. The fact that PDP violated its constitutional provision on rotation does not mean our party will just close its eyes to all the dynamics of election in the country. President Buhari understands the fact that all the regions are important and no one can win the presidential election without carrying the other along” Okechukwu stressed.
