Sunday Dare, the Minister for Youth and Sports Development, has urged the Super Eagles to beat Tunisia in their Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 match on Sunday to honor Stephen Keshi, the team’s former captain and coach.
The Minister asked the team to honor Keshi, who would have turned 60 on Sunday, with a strong performance and win over the Tunisians in a message to the players.
“Keshi was one of the greatest icons of the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and coach in Nigeria. He would have been 60 on Sunday if he was still around with us. We can celebrate him posthumously with another good performance and a sweet victory in our round of 16 game against Tunisia in Garoua, Cameroon on Sunday,” Dare said.
Keshi, sometimes known as Big Boss, won the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia and the 2013 AFCON as a head coach, making him one of only two people to do so, the other being Egypt’s Mohammed El Gohary.
He also took home silver and bronze medals at the AFCON in 1984 and 1988, as well as a bronze in 1992.
In 1988 and 1992, he played alongside current Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen, while goalie coach Alloy Agu was a member of the 1990, 1992, and 1994 teams.
Keshi won the 2013 AFCON in South Africa with current captain Ahmed Musa and defender Kenneth Omeruo, while the captain was Joseph Yobo, who is now an assistant coach in the current line up.
