Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, has issued a warning to the country’s media outlets regarding proper conduct in the run-up to, during, and after the 2023 general elections.
On Thursday, the Minister stated that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) would not hesitate to sanction any media organisation that engages in unprofessional broadcasting and violates the Broadcasting Code.
According to Mohammed, several Nigerian media outlets failed to meet expectations during the 2019 general elections by participating in and enabling inflammatory broadcasts.
He did warn, though, that such behaviour would not be tolerated in the 2023 elections, and that any media station found guilty might face NBC measures, including the loss of its broadcast licence.
InsightnaijaTV reports that the Minister gave the warning on Thursday during the inauguration of the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) governing board in Abuja.
He said: “Also, please note that as we move closer to the 2023 general elections, the NBC will come under increasing pressure to step up its regulatory role to prevent a repeat of what transpired before, during and after the 2019 general elections, when some broadcast stations threw caution to the wind and engaged in inciting, incendiary and unprofessional broadcasts. It is important for the Commission to ensure that its licensees adhere strictly to the tenets of the Broadcasting Code.”
After finishing his address, the Minister asked the Chairman and members of the NBC’s reconstituted Governing Board to stand and remain standing while the Director, Legal, administered the oath of office.
