Prof Attahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has decried a scenario in which many politicians believe that the amount of money they can give to the electorate is the only thing that qualifies them to run for political office in Nigeria.
The former INEC chairman further slammed such politicians, claiming that the majority of them are flaunting ill-gotten and stolen wealth.
Prof. Jega urged Nigerians in 2023 to reject politicians who have nothing to offer but their ill-gotten money, which they parade around.
Character, competence, and capability are three qualities he believes Nigerians should look for in leaders at all levels.
According to Jega, if the systems for selecting leaders do not alter, such individuals will be unable to address the country’s numerous difficulties.
InsightnaijaTV gathered that the former INEC Chairman made the submission at the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni, UMA, during a pre-Ramadan lecture.
He said, “We must develop an overwhelming consensus that political leadership cannot remain the only job for which no qualification appears necessary except to have a lot of money which is usually, stolen money.
“It is for this reason that we must find a way to bring relevant criteria to bear on the selection of leadership in our dear country. We have got to find a way of making character, competence and capacity to determine who leads us.”
