Rabiu Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), claimed on Monday that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, might have been his running mate if he had joined his party.
In an interview with Channels Television, the former Governor of Kano State made this remark.
Following the emergence of an online presidential campaign poster depicting Obi and Kwankwaso as the party’s candidates, there was speculation that Obi would join the NNPP.
Obi, who was not ready to be a running partner in the 2023 presidential election, instead joined the Labour Party, where he became the party’s presidential candidate.
Obi became a member of the LP after announcing his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
When questioned if Obi was approached about joining the NNPP, Kwankwaso claimed he talked about national problems with Obi a few days before he joined the LP.
He said, “Well, actually, we had the opportunity to talk to ourselves on many national issues until a few days to the time when he declared for the Labour Party of which now he is the presidential candidate.
“I wish him well and I wish all other presidential candidates well. I’m sure this (presidential election) will be decided by the people across the country who are going to vote on 25th February 2023.”
When asked if he would have considered Peter Obi as a running mate, Kwankwaso responded that many people had offered it.
The former Governor said, “Many people just suggested that. I believe that it could have been possible if not because him to join another party. Now, he is already a candidate as we have seen on the news now. We look forward to seeing what happens in the next few weeks.{sic}”
