The Yoruba Council of Elders has criticised the Federal Government’s attempt to prosecute Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba Nation agitator who was released by Benin Republic authorities.
The YCE Secretary-General, Kunle Olajide, stated in a statement on Tuesday that the Muhammadu Buhari government should explain the atrocities done by the separatist activist.
Olajide predicted that the upcoming trial of Igboho would fail, claiming that the government had treated the separatist unfairly.
InsightnaijaTV reports that the YCE was responding to a comment made by Abubakar Malami, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, during an interview on Channels Television on Monday.
During the interview, Malami stated that following his trial in Benin Republic, Igboho will be extradited back to Nigeria.
According to the minister, the Yoruba Nation agitator is being tried for breaking laws in the West African country.
Olajide, who condemned Malami’s statement, said the activist’s anticipated prosecution would be a “double trial” after his torture in Benin Republic.
He went on to say that the minister’s statement is lacking in specificity, particularly in light of the fact that Igboho’s home was invaded and vandalized, with people slain.
Olajide claimed that there is clear evidence that Igboho’s life is being sought, prompting him to depart the country for the Benin Republic on his way to Germany.
He said: “That is a double trial, nobody does that because it is double jeopardy. Which law did Igboho break? Malami should have given details so that those who are not in the law profession can understand clearly.
“That statement lacks enough details especially with regards to the fact that Igboho’s house was vandalised with people killed in the dead of the night.
“The first reaction to that invasion by anybody is to protect your life. There is clear evidence that Igboho’s life is being hunted. So which law has Igboho broken after his house was invaded? Malami should state it clearly to Nigerians.”
Olajide noted that the political solution suggested by Malami is viable, but that the solution’s concept may differ from what President Buhari envisions.
He said: “On the political solution he mentioned, it all depends on the president.
“The president might see it differently from his opinion. What he said on a political solution is personal to him. But yes, there can be a political solution.”
