The National Union of Chemical Footwear Rubber Leather and Non Metallic Products Employees has opposed the move by the management of a popular Chemical company in Ota, Ogun State, to retrench some of its workers.
Leaders of the Labour union, led by the National President, Comrade Babatunde Goke Olatunji expressed their resentment as they picketed the company over wide range of alleged anti – labour policies and the closure of the premises since last week Monday.
Affirming the invitation of the union leadership to a meeting tomorrow Wednesday, 8 July, 2020 Comrade Goke – Olatunji vowed that the leaders would not accept the proposed retrenchment or a fifty percent paycut for the workers.
He noted that the proposed retrenchment without negotiations with the national leaders of the union, negates standard labour procedures and the agreement of the frontline unions and the Government that no worker would be unduly disengaged from service, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Assistant General Secretary of Chemical and Non Metallic Products Senior Staff Association Comrade Isreal Olaiya accused the indigenous management of the popular Chemical company in Ota,Ogun State, of being anti – labour and insensitive to the welfare of the workers, noting that they had a better experience with the Indian expatriates until 2014.
The Branch Chairman of the Chemical and Non Metallic Products, Comrade Ibrahim Isiaka, accused the management of undermining every agreement aimed at improving the working condition and welfare of workers of the chemical company since 2014.
The workers displayed placards with inscriptions like ‘Say No To Modern Day Slavery’, Stop Precarious Work, Ensure Health and Safety at Work and Casualisation of Employment, Outsourcing Staffing Are Indecent :We Want Job Security.
