After voters cast their ballots on February 25, 2023, for their favourite candidates, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Mahmood Yakubu says a run-off election for president may be held.
The electoral chief stated that INEC is prepared to handle a presidential run-off should no winner be declared following Aso Rock’s election next month.
This was said by Yakubu on Tuesday when he spoke about the upcoming general elections in Nigeria with the country’s highest electoral authority at the Chatham House policy institute and think tank event in the United Kingdom.
In each of the previous three elections, he claimed, INEC had been ready for the prospect of a run-off, and this year’s presidential election will be no different. He further stated that despite threats on its offices across the country, the commission is not considering postponing the presidential election.

During his speech at the international think tank forum, he informed attendees, “The truth is that the commission prepares for every general election, at least for some time now, in the last three electoral cycles, we also plan for that possibility.
“The reason is: until the constitution was amended, there was only one week for presidential run-off in case it happens. With the number of registered voters we have, it is almost impossible to print the ballot papers required and the result sheet and deliver them to locations and conduct the elections as required.
“So, every election since the last three electoral cycle, we also make provisions for the possibility of a presidential run-off in case it happens. If it happens, then we’ll have no issues, and this year is no exception,” Yakubu said.
With the constitutional modification, according to Yakubu, INEC now has three weeks between the date of the presidential election and the run-off election.
“Fortunately, the time frame has also been extended. The first alteration to the constitution has extended it by two more weeks.
“So, it is now three weeks instead of one week that we have before. We always prepare for that possibility in case it happens. We don’t know; it is in the hands of the voters but if it happens, we will not be caught napping.”
