The long-running strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities had cast doubt on applicants’ chances of admission, but the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) allayed those fears on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.

The Board asserted that it had not withdrawn any admission offers it had made to candidates who had taken the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, despite the strikes that had an influence on the academic calendar beginning in 2020.

However, the board advised the impacted candidates to get in touch with their preferred universities to learn what session they were now in.

Just before he opened the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in Abuja, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, revealed this.

He stated that the university senates were in charge of admission and that JAMB’s job was to oversee the procedure to make sure that candidates weren’t treated unfairly.

The 2020–2021, 2021–2022, and 2022–2023 sessions, according to Prof. Oloyede, were organised by numerous universities.

He asserts that although some universities are still in the academic year 2020–2021, others are in the academic year 202–22, and some universities are in the academic year 2022–2023

Prof. Oloyede advised applicants for admission to get in touch with the respective institutions to learn about the specific session they are running. He assured that no admission by the board has expired or will do so, and he stressed that admission for any given session would be decided by the senate of the various universities.

Additionally, he suggested that applicants get in touch with the school of their choosing to inquire about the current session.

Oloyede declared “The onus of admitting students lie on the respective institutions. JAMB is a coordinating centre. JAMB cannot and will not determine how institutions calendar. You are aware that universities and special institutions are still in their 2020/2021 academic session. Some are on the 2021/2022 academic session and some are on the 2022/2023 academic session.

“We have three academic sessions running in universities in different parts of the country. My advice is that candidates should interact with their respective institutions to know which session is going on and contact JAMB only on

“No admission has been cancelled for any session, or for any institutions except the senate of that institution says so.

“We have all admissions for these three sessions and they have not lapsed and they will not lapse and it is now for the institutions to determine which and how to go about it.”
