Tottenham Hotspur fired manager Nuno Espirito Santo on Monday after barely four months in charge of the London club.
Manchester United defeated the Premier League side 3-0 at home on Saturday, putting them on a five-game losing streak in their previous seven league games.
Nuno, 47, was named manager of Spurs in June after signing a two-year contract with the club. Spurs are presently seventh in the Premier League, 10 points behind champions Chelsea.
“I regret that we have had to take this decision,” said managing director of football at Tottenham, Fabio Paratici.
“I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed.”
“Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future.”
Why Conte could be next manager
Tottenham, in a statement, said a decision on who will succeed Nuno will “follow in due course”.
Former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte, though, appears to be the frontrunner to succeed Nuno at the club.
Remember that the 52-year-old Italian was the club’s first option after Jose Mourinho’s departure in April, but Spurs declined to sign him due to concerns over his demands.
Conte has been unemployed since leaving Inter Milan in May, only a few weeks after leading the team to its first Serie A title in 11 years.
At Chelsea, he also won the Premier League and the FA Cup, although he was fired in July 2018 after a dismal second season in command.
From 2011 to 2014, he was the manager of Juventus, winning three Serie A titles, and from 2014 to 2016, he was the coach of the Italian national team.
