This was disclosed by Tinubu in a statement released on Saturday by his Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale. Tinubu also congratulated Joseph Boakai on his win in the Liberian presidential election and urged him to bring the nation together and provide the people of Liberia with competent government.

President George Weah was commended by President Tinubu for his extraordinary leadership in surrendering the race and preventing a socio-political catastrophe.

President Weah’s outstanding display of democratic sportsmanship, according to the President, is especially admirable in light of the current threats to democracy in West Africa, which are being carried out by hostile actors determined to thwart the will of the people.

President Tinubu stated: “I commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship. He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa. He has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected.”

Recall that when the results were announced, the opposition leader was leading the polls with almost 51% of the votes in Liberia. As a result, African football legend George Weah, the president of Liberia, conceded defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai and declared that the people of Liberia had won, even though he had lost the presidential election.

Weah, however, stated that “there was no way he could overturn Boakai’s lead as the result announced tonight, though not final, indicates that Boakai is in a lead that we cannot surpass” as the nation’s election umpire proceeded with the results pronouncements.

He went on, “This is the moment for graciousness in defeat.”
