All hands are on deck to reduce the impact of traffic on alternative routes during the planned closure of the Third Mainland bridge for maintenance work, for six months.
The Federal Controller of Works, Mr Olukayode Popoola who stated this in a joint media briefing with the Lagos State Commissioner, Frederick Oladeinde in Alausa – Ikeja, explained the project slated to commence on July 24, 2020, had been approved since 2018 by to the Federal Government.
While explaining that the last major repair work on the bridge was done in 2012, Mr Popoola said the entire lanes of the bridge will not be closed at once but done intermittently to ease the traffic burden of road users during the repair works.
He added that the Federal Ministry of works is collaborating with all traffic managers and security agencies in Lagos, to ensure seamless commuting through alternative routes and security of road users during the project.
Contributing, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oladeinde who encouraged people to use more of Public transport during closure, said more fleets of ferries will be deployed on the waterways to reduce the impact of the closure on Lagosians.
On his part, the Lagos State FRSC sector Commander, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemi called for the cooperation of road users to ensure seamless navigation in and out of Lagos -island during the maintenance work.
