The United States is delivering almost 144 million dollars in new help to Afghanistan in response to the refugee crisis, the National Security Council announced on Friday in Washington.
This year, the United States will spend about $474 million on humanitarian aid in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees in the region.
However, the National Security Council made it clear that relief would come from independent humanitarian organizations rather than the Taliban’s militant Islamist regime.
“Our partners provide lifesaving protection, shelter, livelihoods support, essential health care, winterisation assistance, emergency food aid, water, sanitation, and hygiene services in response to the growing humanitarian needs.
“Humaniterian needs are exacerbated by healthcare shortages, drought, malnutrition, and the impending winter,” NSC spokesperson Emily Horne said in a statement.
