Charles Soludo, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Anambra State, has said that the instability in the Southeast state is “politically motivated.”
IPOB’s pro-Biafra agitation has resulted in multiple murders and destruction in Anambra and other South-east states.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Army, a soldier was killed a few days ago after a gun battle between troops and some IPOB militants.
The army claimed to have killed four members of the IPOB.
“Part of the recent upsurge in insecurity in Anambra is politically motivated. There are some persons who think that they will gain political advantage by creating a sense of fear and insecurity so that you would have voters’ suppression,” Mr Soludo said on Monday at a political debate in Awka.
Out of the 18 candidates certified by the Independent National Electoral Commission to fight the November 6 election, Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took part in the Arise News discussion.
In Anambra, Mr Soludo’s party is in power.
Until “the last few months,” Mr Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, claimed Anambra was the safest state in Nigeria, a safe haven for thriving enterprises.
He said that the state’s governor, Willie Obiano, was doing his utmost to address the state’s security concerns.
“The governor as the chief security officer has risen up to the challenge.
“And by the way, you know that all these security agencies happen to be within the purview of the federal government, but we’ve got a security architecture in which the federal forces have been working in tandem, in collaboration with the local vigilante.”
Mr. Soludo stated that if elected governor, one of the ways he would address instability in the state would be to reach a “harmonious agreement with non-state actors.”
Another thing, he suggested, would be to provide “prosperity, jobs, and opportunities for our youths.”
The Anambra election is expected to be interrupted as a result of IPOB’s sit-at-home order, which is being used as a strategy to compel the Nigerian government to release its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is on trial in Abuja for alleged treason.
Mr Soludo and the other two candidates declared during the discussion that they would support the government in holding talks with IPOB.
“The agitation cannot be shut down with a gun. We need to have a dialogue, bring everyone to the table and discuss specific issues that are their agitations,” the APGA candidate said.
