Commercial sex workers in Ghana’s Accra region have announced an increase in their fees, blaming it on economic hardship.
According to JoyNews, sex workers reported that the increase in fuel expenses, combined with general restraints, has had such a negative impact on their business that they have had to raise their fees.
Clients are now charged anywhere from $50 to $300 for a short session lasting 15-20 minutes, and up to $300 for a full night.
Clients were also begged with to bear with the sex workers due to the rise.
To maintain their profession, commercial sex workers in Tana River County, Kenya, computerised their business by joining WhatsApp groups.
Despite the government’s easing of laws, sex workers claim they have yet to recuperate from the effects of Covid-19, pushing them to seek alternative sources of income.
