Two top officials from the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs have been detained for allegedly kidnapping and selling a baby from a mentally ill woman in the state.
The suspects, Sarumi Adeyemi, a ministry director, and Florence Bosede Orisamehin, a senior officer in the same ministry, were accused of selling the infant for N1 million to Toyin Olabiwonninu after she qualified for adoption.
After the baby’s mother, Deborah Iretioluwa Olorundare, a homeless and mentally challenged woman, was taken to the hospital by good Samaritans after giving birth on the street, the infant was handed over to the two government officials by MM Catholic Hospital in Ondo town.
The child’s mother, who was taken to a psychiatric clinic in Akure, the state capital, raised the alarm when she insisted on having given birth to a female child rather than the boy brought to her by the accused four months later.
Following pressure from Olorundare’s family and suspicion from officials at the Ondo State Psychiatric Hospital over the suspects’ failure to bring the child to the hospital for bonding with her mother, the Department of State Services (DSS) launched an investigation, which revealed that the ministry has a ‘child trafficking syndicate.’
Akinnuoye Akinwumi, a medical practitioner at the psychiatric hospital, claimed that despite pressure and repeated requests, the ministry’s employees refused to bring the infant during the patient’s four months under their care.
“On discharge, the doctor had sent a social worker to go with the patient to the ministry in order to witness the handing over of the baby.
“Surprisingly, the officers of the ministry took them to a private orphanage along Ondo road where an imbecile male baby was given to the patient but this baby was rejected by the patient because she insisted that she delivered a baby girl,” he said.
According to sources, Olabiwonninu fled the Nigerian borders with the kid and showed no signs of returning anytime soon.
Meanwhile, the suspects are scheduled to appear in court on November 11, 2021, on conspiracy and child stealing allegations.
