The Senate confirmed Nnamonso Ekanem and Mahmoud Abubakar Magaji as members of the Federal Judicial Service Commission on Wednesday.
The nominees from Akwa-Ibom and Niger States will represent the South-South and North-Central zones, respectively, on the Commission.
Both nominees were confirmed after the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters considered a report.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Committee’s Chairman, stated in his presentation that President Muhammadu Buhari nominated them pursuant to Section 154, subsections (1) and (3), in accordance with paragraph 12 (e) of the Third Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999. (as amended).
According to the lawmaker, the nominees “are fit and proper persons for appointment as Members of the Federal Judicial Service Commission.”
He disclosed that there was no petition or adverse report against the nominees, adding that, “record checks and other forms of investigations by security agencies did not reveal any negative trace against them.”
Senator Bamidele expressed his pleasure with the nominees’ qualifications, experience, competence, and integrity as Commission Members.
In a related event, President Buhari’s request for confirmation of four nominations for the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Commissioners has been forwarded to the Senate Committee on Power.
Dr Yusuf Ali (North Central), Engr Chidi Ike (South East), Mr Nathan Shatti (North East), and Mr Dafe Akpeneye (North East) are among the nominees who will appear before the panel for vetting (South-South).
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, gave the Committee two weeks to report back to the chamber in plenary.
In the meantime, the chamber postponed consideration of a report by the Committee on Aviation on the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (Establishment) Bill, 2021 on Wednesday.
Senator Smart Adeyemi, the Committee’s Chairman, presented a presentation on the report.
The debate on the report was halted in the middle after legislators discovered a “mistake” in the Committee’s report on the bill.
Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Niger North) made the motion for the report to be withdrawn, which was seconded by Ahmad Babba Kaita (Katsina North).
