Samuel Eto’o, a former Barcelona player, was chosen president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) on Saturday.
When the country hosts the Africa Cup of Nations in January, the former Indomitable Lions hero will be in charge of the national team (AFCON).
During his professional career, Eto’o played for Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea.
He will take over an organization that has been stained by infighting, incompetence, and allegations of corruption for a long time.
Seidou Mbombo Njoya, the fourth vice-president of the Confederation of African Football, was defeated by the four-time African Footballer of the Year (CAF).
Seven candidates were supposed to run in the elections, however, five of them dropped out on election day.
Eto’o, who is 40 years old, has pledged a slew of reforms to help his country’s sport prosper, and now he has his chance.
“We have to bring footballers to the center of our policies,” said Eto’o.
“It is our role to ensure that those who play this discipline make a decent living out of it.
“I’ve spoken to the business community and we’re certain we’ll get the right investors who can accompany us in fulfilling our goals,” Eto’o had said prior to the polls.
