Less than two weeks to the party’s much awaited state congress, spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Ogbonna Nwuke, has resigned.
Nwuke, a former member of the House of Representatives, in a September 19, 2021 letter addressed to the leadership of the party, said that his decision to quit his position as party spokesperson “is strictly personal.”
“We believe that our assignment here has been done. We came at a time of great internal strife, when there was a strong need to effectively connect with the party’s many audiences”, the statement said.
He added: “Everything that has a beginning has an end. It is time to move on, and time to concentrate on other things of great interest.”
It will be recalled that Governor Nyesom Wike, Senator Magnus Abe and Chief Nwuke were appointed to serve in the Rotimi Amaechi administration in 2007 on same day.
While Wike served as Chief of Staff in the administration, Abe served as Secretary to the State Government while Nwuke was named the Director of Press Affairs to the Governor.
Nwuke’s exit as spokesperson of the APC is already generating mixed reactions amongst politicians in the state.
Chief Kakazuzu Azuh, a former APC Chairman in Oyigbo Local Government Area told newsmen that Nwuke may be on his way out of the party.
He said, “Nwuke maybe heading to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as he still has a strong relationship and bond with Governor Wike.
“They all served together in 2007 in different capacities but under same administration. I won’t be surprised to hear he has defected to PDP as his sudden resignation is still shocking to the Rivers APC.”
