The government of Ogun has announced a prerogative of mercy for 31 detainees from the state’s correctional service centers.
During the release of the detainees, the state Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, made the news at the ceremonial hall of the court complex in Abeokuta.
Eight were pardoned from Oba, six from Ibara-Abeokuta, six from Ijebu-Ode, eight from Ilaro, and three from Sagamu detention institutions, according to Justice Dipeolu.
The CJ stated that those who were given amnesty had been detained for a period of time, some due to ill health, and others because their case files could not be discovered.
He counseled them to avoid reverting to their previous habits and instead pursue tangible careers.
Justice Dipeolu said, “Usually, there is an administration of criminal justice committee which looks through the lists of inmates and recommends those that are worthy of release after lots of investigations.”
She went on to say that new mechanisms had been used in which convicts’ photos with full details were captured for record purposes, and that if the inmates committed more crimes after being released, the records would be retrieved and the perpetrators dealt with according to the law’s rules.
Mr. AbdulRasheed Alimi, Controller of Correctional Centres, Ogun State Command, praised the CJ for establishing the criminal justice committee’s administration, noting that the quarterly release of inmates had aided in the decongestion of correctional centres as well as the reformation of some of the inmates.
Mr. Taiwo Olukoyede, the Head of Advocacy for a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Friends of Joseph Foundation (FOJOF), noted that several offenders who had been pardoned in the past had been rehabilitated and were doing well.
