Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer Files Suit Against NIA Director General Over Kenya Arrest

Aloy Ejimakor, a lawyer for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has filed a lawsuit against Ahmed Abubakar, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NSIA).

He filed the claim in the High Court of Abia State, Umuahia, against the NIA chief for his role in Kanu’s arrest in Kenya.

Kanu’s lawyer stated in court records that he has evidence implicating the NIA DG in what he called a “extraordinary rendition.”

Since Kanu was returned to Nigeria, this is the first lawsuit filed against Abubakar in either a personal or official role.

The following reliefs are sought in the lawsuit:

I. A DECLARATION of this Honorable Court that the Defendant’s arrest of the Claimant and his imprisonment of the Claimant at said location in Nairobi, Kenya false amounted to false arrest and false imprisonment.

II, A DECLARATION of this Honorable Court that the Defendant acted in bad faith and/or abused his public office in falsely imprisoning the Claimant at the said location in Kenya.

III. AN ORDER of this Honorable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant the sum of N20,000,000,000.00 (Twenty Billion Naira only) being general and exemplary damages.

IV, AN ORDER of this Honorable Court directing the Defendant to write and deliver to the Claimant, an unreserved personal letter of apology. The letter of apology shall be prominently and boldly published full-page in two Nigerian Newspapers of national circulation, namely: Guardian Newspaper and Sun Newspaper.

V, AN ORDER of this Honorable Court directing the Defendants to pay the cost of this Suit.

VI. AND SUCH FURTHER ORDER(S) as this Honourable Court may deem fit and expedient to make in the circumstance.
