The daily count of coronavirus-related deaths stayed on a high with 15 new fatalities on Tuesday, making it 44 persons confirmed to have died of COVID-19 complications within the past 72 hours.
The toll currently stands at 1,464.
Lagos (276), Edo (130) and FCT (118) currently have the highest record of deaths.
Meanwhile, Lagos maintained its position as the national epicentre of coronavirus infections, as the state confirmed 551 new positive samples, out of the total of 1,301 fresh cases recorded by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Tuesday.
The new cases, which were confirmed in 21 states and the federal capital territory (FCT), were announced in the NCDC’s update for January 19, 2021.
With the Tuesday figure, Nigeria has recorded over 1,000 new cases for 16 consecutive days — during the same period, over 23,000 fresh infections have been confirmed across the country.
However, the figure of discharged patients doubled within the past 24 hours — the number of single-day recoveries increased from 622 on Monday to 1,261 on Tuesday.
According to the agency, the patients discharged on Tuesday included “702 community recoveries in Lagos, 157 in FCT and 143 in Plateau managed in line with guidelines”.
A total of 113,305 infections have now been confirmed across Nigeria, but 91,200 recoveries have been recorded.
