According to reports, Manchester United’s annual Player of the Season awards ceremony has been canceled because first-team players were ‘too humiliated’ to attend the black-tie event.
United has had a disappointing season. The team is now sixth in the Premier League table, 32 points behind champions Manchester City, with one game remaining in the season.
They have not only missed out on Champions League football as a result of 11 league defeats, but they will also finish the season with the lowest points total in Premier League history when they face Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Many United fans are eager for the season to end, from the dismissing of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November following a dismal run of form, to the hiring of caretaker Ralf Rangnick, who has failed to re-ignite what was already a sinking ship at Old Trafford.
According to The Mirror, the club’s top players ‘were ashamed’ about conducting the end-of-season ceremony as a result of their dismal on-field performances, which is why club administrators decided to postpone the celebration.
United has elected to hold an online poll for supporters to vote for their Player of the Year, but they are still deciding how to present the trophy.
The event is generally held in the final two weeks of the campaign, but due to COVID, it has not occurred in the last two years.
