Muhammed Abubakar, 25, was detained in Ilorin, Kwara State’s capital, for reportedly assaulting a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer and attempting to swindle a POS operator and filling station attendant.
The suspect was detained on Saturday, December 11th, according to Babawale Zaid Afolabi, the state spokesman for the National Security and Civil Defense Corps.
According to Afolabi, the suspect committed the crime in Ilorin’s Amoyo neighborhood.
The statement reads: “On Saturday 11/12/2021, we received a distress call at our Amoyo division over a case of assault, attempted fraud and stealing by trick leveled against one Muhammed Abubakar, 25, who was accused to have made attempt to defraud a filling station attendant Abdulraheem Nafisat of a sum more than N50,000.”
He went on to say that the suspect went to the filling station and bought fuel and yogurt goods, as well as asking the employee to transfer N50,000 to his account.
The suspect was supposed to pay cash to the POS operator, but he refused and attempted to flee the station before making all of the required payments.
The POS/filling station employee later raised an alarm, which drew the attention of authorities from the NSCDC, who apprehended the individual.
During the course of an investigation, he allegedly assaulted one of the NSCDC officers.
Following further questioning, it was discovered that the suspect was a serial fraudster who had previously duped a hotel receptionist and a store employee.
Iskilu Ayinla Makinde, the State Commandant, has asked for a complete inquiry, following which the suspect would be tried in court.
