AHarvard- trained lawyer, Steven Donziger, who spent decades battling Chevron Corp over pollution within the Ecuadorian rainforest was doomed Friday to 6 months ’ imprisonment for misprision of court charges arising from a suit brought by the company.
Donziger won a$9.5 billion judgment against Chevron in an Ecuadorian court in 2011.
Notwithstanding, three stretches thereafter,U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan refused to implement the$9.5 billion judgement, saying it had been secured through bribery, fraud and overcharging.
U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska doomed Steven Donziger after chancing him shamefaced in May of “ intentionally ” defying court orders, including failing to show over his computer and other electronic predisposition.
Donziger ’s attorney, Martin Garbus, called the doom “ outrageous. ”
Chevron and individualized attorneys serving as prosecutors for the united commonwealths did not incontinently reply to requests for comment.
Donziger plans to appeal.
He’ll remain under home confinement, where he has been for 2 years if he appeals fast.
His sentencing is that the latest twist during a legal saga stemming from his representation of townsmen in Ecuador ’s Lago Agrio region who sought to carry Chevron responsible for water and soil impurity by Texaco between 1964 and 1992.
Chevron acquired Texaco in 2000.
San Ramon, California- based Chevron sued him in Manhattan court thereafter that year, claiming that he and his associates forced the presiding Judge in Ecuador.
Chevron thereafter sought to recoup money Donziger personally reaped within the Ecuadorian case, and Kaplan ordered Donziger to show over electronic devices to the company ’s forensic experts.
When he refused, Kaplan charged him with misprision of court.
He was disbarred by a replacement York appellate court last year.
