On Saturday, September 10, 2022 Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike welcomed hundreds of APC defectors to the PDP.
Desmond Akawor, the PDP chairman in Rivers, Sam-Sam Jaja, Fred Igwe, the former commissioner for sports, and hundreds of their followers were present at the ceremony in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
They include Sylver Opusunju, Tele Bethram Ikuru, Princewill Dike, Reginald Onwuka, Bestman Amadi, Amadi Nnokam, Muma Gift, and Kennedy Ebeku.
The governor claims that his main duty is to make sure that all Rivers candidates are elected the following year.

Prior to any other individual or group, Wike said, “Rivers State is vital to me.”
“All of you who have come back to the family, you have one role or the other to play for the emergence of our governorship candidate,” he added.
The governor said the defectors came at the right time, noting that the 2023 elections “is not for big men, it is not for those who won’t come back home to mobilise their people; they are only interested in being politicians away”.

Politicians are created at home, he said. I’ve modified my electoral strategy; no more huge dudes. I’m aiming for people who are significant in their respective units.
“All of the folks who are leaving are the ones whose names you won’t hear, but they are the ones who carry out the task. Since we have been pulling them back, all of those “huge men” are in danger.
