With just two minutes remaining, Gray slid a confident shot past Dean Henderson thanks to a great assist from England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who should have done better.

Salomon Rondon received his first Premier League start since January after two losses, thanks to Frank Lampard.

The host team got off to a fast start, matching the Merseyside sunshine, and Anthony Gordon looked vibrant despite Chelsea transfer rumours.

He fired from 25 yards, forcing Henderson to make a flying save. Henderson then stooped low to block an attempt by Alex Iwobi.

Tom Davies also botched his shot after the visitors left him unmarked at the far post during a set-piece.

After a 23-year absence, Forest has had a respectable start to life in the Premier League. They finally created a threat when Pickford was forced to make a save from Neco Williams and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Gordon was enraged and made the first arrest when Lewis O’Brien was taken down by a high challenge.

By hammering his free kick to the near post in an attempt to surprise Henderson, Gray forced the Forest goalkeeper to block with his legs.

After 55 minutes, midfielder Orel Mangala limped off and was replaced by Ryan Yates, forcing Forest to make a substitution.

However, a few minutes later, manager Steve Cooper sent on record signing Morgan Gibbs-White for his Forest debut after a £25 million transfer from Wolves, which caused a great deal of enthusiasm.

Amadou Onana, an Everton substitute, was fortunate not to leave early. He relied on referee Andre Marriner not showing a second card after he untidily bundled over O’Brien after receiving a booking for slipping in and challenging Awoniyi.
