Professor (Mrs) Adenike Temidayo Oladiji of the University of Ilorin’s Department of Biochemistry has been named the university’s ninth substantive vice-chancellor by the governing council of the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

The council ratified the nomination at its special meeting on Thursday, May 12, 2022, presided over by the pro-chancellor and chairman of the council, Ambassador (Dr.) Godknows Igali, according to a statement signed by the registrar and secretary to the council, Mr. Richard Arifalo.

Out of the 27 male and two female candidates who applied for the position, twenty were shortlisted for an interview at the start of the process.

Nineteen individuals were interviewed, with one of the finalists failing to appear.

Following the interview, the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board nominated three candidates for appointment, in accordance with the process’s current regulations.

Because the three recommended candidates’ scores were so close (0.1 percent), the council decided to put it to a vote, and Professor Oladiji came out on top, earning her position.

Vice chancellors of universities are appointed by the governing council of universities, which, on the suggestion of an internal selection committee, has the authority to choose from any of the three best candidates offered to it.

Professor Oladiji’s position begins on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, and will last for five years, according to a letter of appointment personally signed by Dr. Igali.

Mrs. Oladiji was born on April 27, 1968, in Lagos, Nigeria. Between 1972 and 1977, she attended Christ Anglican School, Ijomu-Oro, Iludun Oro Nursery, and Primary School, and between 1977 and 1982, she attended St. Claire’s Anglican Grammar School, Offa, both in Kwara State.

She graduated from the University of Ilorin with a B.Sc. Biochemistry, Second Class Upper Division degree in 1988, an MSc. Biochemistry degree in 1991, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biochemistry in 1997.

She started as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Ilorin in July 1992 and was promoted to Professor in September 2011.

Professor Oladiji, a prolific researcher with over 100 publications, has received numerous honors and accolades, including the University’s Merit Award, Certificate of Merit, and scholarships, among others. She is a member of both the Nigerian Academy of Science and the Nigerian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

She has worked on numerous scientific committees at the National Universities Commission and the Tertiary Education Fund, as well as being an external examiner at more than 20 universities in Nigeria and abroad.

She is a member of the West African Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA), the American Society of Nutrition, the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OSWD), the Science Association of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology.

Professor Oladiji takes over from Professor Joseph Fuwape, whose term ends on May 23, 2022.
