Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has criticised President Buhari’s stance on the naira redesign policy.

Flouting Supreme Court's order is call for anarchy ― Wike

The president has created a hazardous precedent by disobeying the Supreme Court’s temporary injunction halting the ban on old naira notes, according to Wike, who spoke yesterday at the campaign flag-off event in Ngo Town, the centre of the Andoni local government area. He argued that disobeying the ruling of the nation’s top court is a clear cry for chaos.

The governor said that he opposed the suffering of the populace and categorically opposed the so-called “naira redesign programme,” as it was known.

According to Wike, Nigeria is a constitutional democracy where the rule of law is supreme. Whenever a government policy is being challenged in court for whatever reason, it is proper to exhaust all available legal remedies or, better still, to stop implementing the policy altogether.

He said, “I believe in a country that respects the rule of law. The president ought to respect the Supreme Court and when you do not respect the Supreme Court then it is anarchy you are talking about.

“So, we from Rivers State we condemn the position of Mr. President for not respecting the decision of the Supreme Court.”

“We want a democracy and there cannot be democracy without the rule of law. Therefore, any candidate who is in support of the policy when the people are suffering, we will not support that candidate. “Any policy you have to implement, you have to weigh it because you are put there for the people. If your policy is going to suffer the people, then think twice.”

Wike informed the Andoni people that they had previously been subject to poor leadership, which had prevented them from enjoying the advantages of a finished Andoni axis of the Ogoni-Opobo-Andoni Unity Road. The construction of the Andoni axis of the Ogoni-Opobo-Andoni Unity Road is one example of how the area will see greater development now that they have strong leadership that will not limit them to Port Harcourt.

As he entered Ngo Town for the campaign, he declared that history had already been created since he had insisted that the Andoni axis of the Ogoni-Opobo-Andoni Unity Road be finished.

Dr. Siminialayi Fubara, a PDP candidate for governor of Rivers State, encouraged the Andoni people to support him and the consolidation team in order to carry on the New Rivers Vision.

In order to maintain security and carry out further initiatives in Andoni, Fubara promised that the consolidation team will collaborate with the council chairman, local political leaders, and traditional leaders after winning the election.

The PDP’s Rivers State Chairman, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, gave party flags to the candidates during his address and asked the Andoni people to vote for the PDP.

On his part, Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani discredited the rumour that Andoni voters would choose a different party, calling it a hoax.

He affirmed that the Andoni people are determined to support all of the PDP candidates running for office in Rivers State, and he commended Governor Wike for maintaining his promise to permit automobiles to enter Ngo town.

Senator Barinada Mpigi claimed that the PDP is the opposition party to beat because it is focused on the needs of its members and the upcoming election.

He asserted that the Andoni people will utilise their ballots to show their appreciation for the local development initiatives carried out by governor Wike.

Previously, the palace of His Majesty, King J. W. Okuruket Nnabiget – XIV JP, Okaan Ama Ngo in Ngo was visited by Governor Wike, Fubara, South-South Vice Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, and other party officials.
