The Federal Government has finally agreed to meet with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The meeting, which will begin at 5 p.m. at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, will take place 56 days after ASUU began its strike.

Patience Onuobia, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, sent out a press release announcing the meeting.

“The Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, will be meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities today by 5 pm,” the notice said.

In a conversation with journalists, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke said that if the government does not meet the union’s requests, the strike might be extended for another four months.

According to Osodeke, the Federal Government has made no move to meet with them in order to negotiate a settlement and terminate the strike.

“There has been no meeting to resolve the issue between ASUU and the FG. They’ve not reached out, we are still waiting for them.

“The government is not really interested in education. If they were interested, they wouldn’t allow the strike to last more than 1 week but this is the 7th week and they’ve not made any comment,” he said.

On February 14, 2022, ASUU began a warning strike to press its demands, which include renegotiating its 2009 agreement with the government and deploying the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) to replace the Federal Government’s Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

Payment of earned academic allowances, cash for the regeneration of public universities, promotion arrears, and inadequate support of state universities are among the other requests.

ASUU has also sought the publishing of the government’s visitation panels’ reports on federal universities, as well as the regular payment of academics’ salaries.
