The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has resisted Godwin Emefiele’s request to have his international passport released so that he can travel to the UK for medical treatment.

Abuse of office: Court admits Emefiele to N50 million bail - 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE

The EFCC asserts that there is no evidence that Emefiele’s condition could not have been treated in Nigeria. Emefiele is a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and is being charged with several charges of suspected fraud and abuse of office.

Emefiele’s attorney, Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal, requested in an affidavit submitted to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court that his client’s passport be released so that he might receive medical care in the United Kingdom (UK). Nonetheless, prosecution attorney Muhammad Abbas Omeiza informed the court on Monday in a counter-affidavit that Emefiele’s condition is not documented in any medical report that is on file.

The prosecution said that Emefiele may be enticed to break his bail terms if it were granted, and that the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria had submitted his passport to the court as part of fulfilling those requirements.

“The defendant has co-conspirators all over the world. One Anita and Tony are all aides of the defendant who are currently in the UK,” the counsel was quoted in an EFCC statement.

“The defendant might be tempted to jump bail because he is standing trial in three different courts.”

The presiding judge, Hamza Mua’zu, adjourned the ruling on the application to July 16.after listening to all the arguments.
