Drama As Reps Reject Motion To Probe Invasion Of Uyo High Court By Police

A minor drama unfolded yesterday at the House of Representatives plenary when the motion to investigate the invasion of a high court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, by certain police personnel was killed by the deputy speaker, Mr. Idris Wase, who presided.

Serguis Ogun, who represents Edo State’s Esan North federal seat, tabled the motion. On the paper, the motion was stated as item number ten.

Wase got into trouble when he skipped it and moved on to the next one. However, Ogun drew his attention to the action that had been overlooked. Wase said that he intentionally skipped it since Ogun was creating a racket during the plenary. However, Ogun denied this, claiming that he was discussing his move with a colleague and that he wasn’t the only one who made a racket throughout the hearing.

“My motion is the next listed, I’m here to take it. Mr. Speaker, I know you have the power not to take it,” he said. But the deputy speaker chided him which prompted him to tender an apology to the House afterward.

Inquiring further, Chief Whip of the House, Mohammed Monguno, pointed out flaws in Ogun’s conduct and advocated for censure to act as a deterrence to others. Wase, on the other hand, accepted the apologies but refused to be sanctioned.

All of this occurred in front of Ghanaian legislators who were in the country to shadow their Nigerian colleagues.

Wase eventually contacted Ogun to move his motion after accepting the apologies.

However, when the motion was put to a voice vote, the House rejected it, clearly expressing their displeasure with Ogun.
