Data Protection Bill Passes Second Reading At Lagos Assembly

The Lagos State House of Assembly has moved to protect the private information of businesses and individuals, with the state Data Protection Bill passing second reading.

Lanre Afinni of Lagos Island II, who introduced the bill in plenary on Monday, indicated that the goal was to monitor data processors to minimize manipulation.

Afinni stated that consent is required before an individual’s information is released to the public, and that the bill will assist preserve people’s private rights.

Rotimi Abiru, who represents Shomolu Constituency II, commented that the law will create cash for the state.

Abiru stated that precautions were necessary since businesses were still recuperating from the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Abiodun Tobun of Epe II said the bill was apt because of technological advancement, adding that the bill “will prevent fraud and transfer of information without the consent of the owner.”

Instead of forming a new commission, Ibrahim Layode suggested that the Lagos State Registration Agency take on the duty.

Layode stated that forming another commission for the purpose would be a waste of time and resources.

David Setonji, Chairman of the House Committee on Information and Strategy, expressed concern over the bill’s human rights component.

David, on the other hand, advised the committee to take a close look at the part.

Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Chamber, then referred the bill to the House Committee on Science and Technology, which is chaired by Afinni, and requested the committee to report back to the house within two weeks.
