A few months after being impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly, Philip Shaibu was reinstated as the deputy governor of Edo State by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Omotosho also ruled that the impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly was illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void.
The court ruled on Wednesday that the aforementioned impeachment constituted a flagrant breach of the 1999 Constitution’s modified sections 188 and 35.

A perpetual injunction prohibiting Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Edo State House of Assembly from preventing Shaibu from carrying out his official duties was issued by the court, which also mandated that he receive his salaries and benefits as of April, the month he was impeached as the state’s deputy governor.
In addition, Judge Omotosho gave Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun an order to reinstate his security personnel.
The Edo State House of Assembly has moved for a stay of execution while it files an appeal, announcing that it will challenge the High Court’s decision.
